Alloy wheels waiting to go into the powder coat oven

A kiss of a kerb can lead to all sorts of nightmares with your newly bought ride. Chipping or scratching the alloy from getting too close to a kerb can cause penetration to the thin layer of lacquer. Once that has happened, the lacquer is compromised and moisture will begin to seep in. This starts oxidation between the lacquer and the metal wheel. Over time the moisture makes its way to the bare-metal wheel resulting in the lacquer deteriorating and appearing cloudy.

Why is the refurbishment needed?

Diamond cut wheel corrosion and kerb damage are one of the biggest reasons why diamond cut wheel refurbishment is needed.

In some cases, diamond-cut wheels only have one layer of lacquer protection from the factory. Due to this thin layer water can easily penetrate underneath the lacquer spreading white corrosion to the rest of the diamond-cut face.

The corrosion will start to creep under the lacquer leaving white ‘worm-like’ marks. If not addressed it will get worse allowing the cracks to grow in the lacquer and the corrosion ultimately affecting the alloy wheel

What’s the solution?

The solution to this is either to buy new wheels or to have them diamond cut. Diamond-cut alloy wheels can be re-diamond cut but no more than twice. When metal is shaved off the face it ultimately affects the structural integrity of the wheel will suffer.

Why is the process called Diamond-cut?

The term ‘diamond-cut’ refers to getting its name from the diamond cut tip used on a machine called a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) lathe. The diamond-cut machine is used by our technicians to precisely cut a thin layer off the surface of the wheel. This gives their shiny, bare-metal appearance, and can often give a two-tone look to the wheel.

Essentially, they’re like ordinary painted alloy wheels with the face machined off to expose the metal. This bare-metal surface is then coated in a protective layer of lacquer to defend against rust.

The result looks stunning. A shiny metal face with paint lining the inside of the wheel looks spectacular and forms part of the iconic look.

Summary

If the profile of the wheel is not mapped out correctly by a skilled operative, too much of the face of the wheel can be cut off, rendering the wheel unsafe. Another factor is how polished the wheel looks if the alloy wheel is not cut correctly you may have a dull effect or have deep grooves in the cut.
